Michel Blanc was born on April 16, 1952, in Courbevoie, France. He is the son of Aimé Blanc, a factory worker, and Renée-Paule (née Domergue), a housewife. Blanc has one sister, Marie-Christine. Blanc's parents divorced when he was young, and he was raised by his mother in a working-class neighborhood of Paris. Blanc attended the Lycée Voltaire and the Lycée Claude Bernard, where he studied literature and theater.

In 1974, Blanc co-founded the theater company Le Splendid with his friends Thierry Lhermitte, Gérard Jugnot, Christian Clavier, and Josiane Balasko. Le Splendid quickly became one of the most popular theater companies in France, and Blanc's performances in their productions earned him critical acclaim.
