Early Life and Political Career
Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, was born in Plains, Georgia in 1924. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy, he served in the U.S. Navy for seven years. In 1962, he was elected to the Georgia State Senate.
Presidency
Carter ran for president in 1976 and defeated incumbent Gerald Ford. As president, he focused on human rights, and brokered the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt. He also established the Department of Energy.
Post-Presidency
Carter left office in 1981 and has since been involved in various humanitarian efforts. He founded the Carter Center in 1982, which focuses on promoting democracy and resolving conflicts around the world.
